As an employer, it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of your workplace and employees. This includes compliance with laws surrounding fire equipment and training. Fire equipment such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, and emergency alarms are essential to prevent injury and loss of life in case of a fire.

Ensuring that all employees receive proper training on how to use and maintain fire equipment can make a significant difference in the event of an emergency. It is crucial to have regular drills where employees practice using the equipment appropriately. By doing so, you can help prevent panic in potential emergencies because your staff will know what actions they should take.

It is crucial that you prioritise safety measures at work by ensuring compliance with regulations regarding fire equipment. Investing in employee training programs for handling and maintaining this critical safety gear can save lives during an emergency situation. Regularly reviewing these policies also helps keep everyone safe while providing peace of mind for both management teams and workers alike.

Our Fire Equipment Training course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely conduct routine six-monthly (level 1) and annual (level 2) inspections, servicing and maintenance, and testing/tagging of fire extinguishers, fire blankets and fire hose reels in accordance with relevant Australian standards. Fire Equipment Training provides a blend of theoretical instruction with practical training in relation to the testing of firefighting equipment and is suitable for everyone.

Fire Equipment Training Frequently Asked Questions

Is fire extinguisher training mandatory in Australia?

Employers, main contractors, self-employed persons and persons in control of a workplace are required in accordance with Regulation 3.10 to:
• develop an evacuation procedure for fire or other emergencies at the workplace;
• display the evacuation procedure and a diagram, showing the exits and the position in relation to the exits, clearly and prominently at the workplace, where practicable;
• practice the evacuation procedure at reasonable intervals, where practicable; and
• train persons who would be required to help control or extinguish a fire and provide appropriate protective clothing and equipment to these persons.

Which certification is best for fire and safety?

AS 1851 (stands for Australian Standards 1851) is a set of rules and regulations that ensure building owners are compliant in meeting the safety standards imposed on fire protection systems. These rules and regulations help to ensure all state and Work Health & Safety rules are met so the building owner can be sure they are in compliance with all applicable laws.

Do I need to be trained to use a fire extinguisher?

Employers have a duty of care to ensure people are trained to safely operate a fire extinguisher and so employees know what type of extinguisher should be used for different types of fires.

What qualifications do I need to service fire extinguishers?

To ensure that fire extinguishers meet compliance, it is essential to have them serviced regularly. The Standard AS1851 requires all fire extinguishers to be tested and tagged at six monthly intervals, with replacement after 3-5 years. Therefore it is essential that servicing is left to trained service technicians who know testing and tagging requirements and service requirements.

Do all staff need fire extinguisher training?

Generally speaking, if you have one or more employees or volunteers working in your business, you have a legal duty as an employer to provide fire safety training. So, this means that everyone on your team should take a fire safety training course.
