Scissor Lift Ticket Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a ticket for a scissor lift?

Yes, you need a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) to operate a scissor lift. To obtain a HRWL for scissor lift, you must complete a nationally recognized training course, pass a practical assessment and pass a medical examination. The training course will cover topics such as safety procedures, operation and maintenance of the equipment, and emergency procedures. Once you have completed the course and passed the assessment, you will be issued with a HRWL, which is commonly referred to as a "ticket" for the scissor lift. This licence is valid for five years and it can be renewed by passing an assessment and a medical examination again.

Can anyone use a scissor lift?

The use of a scissor lift is restricted to individuals who hold a valid High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) for scissor lift operation. Only those who have completed a nationally recognized training course, passed a practical assessment, and passed a medical examination are legally permitted to operate a scissor lift.

Employers also have a legal responsibility to ensure that their employees are properly trained and qualified to operate a scissor lift. They should only allow those who hold a valid HRWL to operate the equipment and should also provide ongoing training and supervision to ensure that the equipment is used safely.

It is important to note that there are some exceptions to this rule, for example, in some cases, an employee who is under direct supervision of a licensed operator may be allowed to operate a scissor lift, but this depends on the regulations and laws of the specific state or territory.

In general, it is important to follow the laws and regulations in place to ensure the safety of the workers and others in the area.

What qualification do I need to operate a scissor lift?

The qualification required to operate a scissor lift is a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) for scissor lift operation. This licence is issued by the relevant state or territory's regulatory body after the individual has completed a nationally recognized training course, passed a practical assessment, and passed a medical examination.

To obtain a HRWL for scissor lift, you will need to:

1. Complete a nationally recognized training course: The training course will cover topics such as safety procedures, operation and maintenance of the equipment, and emergency procedures.

2. Pass a practical assessment: This assessment will test your ability to safely operate a scissor lift.

3. Pass a medical examination: This is to ensure that you are fit and able to safely operate the equipment.

Once you have completed the course, passed the assessment and passed the medical examination, you will be issued with a HRWL. The licence is valid for five years, after that it will be required to renew it by passing an assessment and a medical examination again.

It's important to check the regulations and laws of the specific state or territory you are in, as it can vary slightly depending on the location.

How much does a scissor lift licence cost?

The cost of obtaining a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) for scissor lift operation can vary depending on the state or territory and the institution offering the training. On average, the cost can range from $800 to $1,500. (Mine Training Australia offers it for only $360)

It's important to note that the cost of the licence will not only include the training and assessment fee, but also the medical examination fee and the licence fee. Some institutions may also offer payment plans or financial assistance options, it's best to check with the specific institution for their fees and costs.

It's also important to note that the cost of obtaining a HRWL for scissor lift operation may be covered by an employer, as they are also responsible for ensuring their employees are properly trained and qualified to operate the equipment. It's best to check with the employer if they can cover the cost or not.

How long does a scissor lift licence last?

A High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) for scissor lift operation is valid for five years from the date of issue. After five years, it will be required to renew the licence by passing an assessment and a medical examination again.

What are the OSHA requirements for scissor lifts?

These regulations require employers to ensure that their employees are properly trained and qualified to operate the equipment, and to provide ongoing training and supervision to ensure that the equipment is used safely. Employers must also ensure that scissor lifts are properly maintained and inspected, and that any defects are repaired before the equipment is used.

The Australian Standards AS 2550.10-2010 is also a guide for safe use of scissor lift, it covers the requirements for the design, construction, testing, examination, inspection, maintenance, and operation of scissor lift.

It is important to check the OHS regulations and laws of the specific state or territory you are in, as they may vary slightly depending on the location.

Does OSHA require scissor lift certification?

However, they do require that employers ensure their employees are properly trained and qualified to operate the equipment. This includes providing ongoing training and supervision to ensure that the equipment is used safely.

To operate a scissor lift, individuals must hold a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) for scissor lift operation. The HRWL is issued by the relevant state or territory's regulatory body after the individual has completed a nationally recognized training course, passed a practical assessment, and passed a medical examination.

In addition, employers are responsible for ensuring that the equipment is properly maintained and inspected, and that any defects are repaired before the equipment is used.

Can you fail a scissor lift test?

Yes, it is possible to fail a scissor lift test. The test is designed to assess the individual's knowledge, skills, and abilities in operating a scissor lift safely and efficiently. The test includes both a theoretical and practical component, and candidates must demonstrate their understanding of safety procedures, operation, and maintenance of the equipment, as well as their ability to operate the forklift in a safe and controlled manner.
