Environmental Training Delivery – Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited, Papua New Guinea

Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited, a world-class mining project located in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, engaged Mine Training Australia to deliver targeted environmental training for their HSE personnel. The request came in response to the Papua New Guinea Government’s strengthened regulatory focus on environmental compliance, requiring personnel to be upskilled in environmental impact assessment and management.

The objective was to deliver training that not only met national requirements but also directly supported environmental performance on site ensuring that both PNG and Chinese national staff were confident and competent in applying their learning in real-world mining contexts.
Tailored Training for a Diverse Workforce

Mine Training Australia proposed the delivery of two nationally recognised units:

  • RIIENV502E – Undertake Process or Project Environmental Impact Assessments
  • RIIENV501E – Implement and Maintain Environmental Management Plans

Our solution was designed to be both culturally responsive and operationally practical. With two groups of 60 participants one based at the KBK Mine and the other at the BSK Refinery we offered a face-to-face delivery model, allowing for in-depth learning and on-site assessment per location.

To ensure the technical quality and contextual relevance of the training content, we engaged the services of SRK Consulting, a globally recognised leader in mining-related consulting. Their input helped tailor our learning materials specifically to the environmental considerations of the Ramu NiCo operation.

This collaboration highlights our commitment to quality and our ability to bring in the right expertise when needed.

Training was further customised to include:

  • Learning resources aligned to the mine’s operating environment, with materials prepared in advance for translation where needed
  • Full logistical coordination across both remote sites
  • Collaboration with a translator provided by Ramu NiCo to support Chinese-speaking participants
  • Delivery by one of our senior mining professionals, with over 30 years of experience in both open pit and underground operations, and extensive background working across Australia, Papua New Guinea and China

Our facilitator’s experience working with multilingual teams and cross-cultural environments ensured the training was delivered in a clear, engaging, and inclusive manner building strong rapport with participants and ensuring comprehension across both PNG and Chinese national staff.

Practical Implementation and National Recognition
By delivering the training face-to-face, participants were able to complete both the theoretical learning and practical assessments on site. This minimised disruption to operations while maximising the likelihood of successful course completion.

Participants who completed the training received a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment, issued by Pivot Solutions Pty Ltd (RTO 51586) and aligned with Australian standards.

The program provided Ramu NiCo with a compliant, scalable, and locally tailored solution to meet environmental training requirements. By combining in-house capability with external expertise from SRK Consulting, Mine Training Australia was able to deliver a solution that was not only technically sound but immediately useful for participants on the ground.

This project is a strong example of our commitment to quality, cultural sensitivity and practical implementation leveraging a broad network of professionals to deliver results that meet the specific needs of each client and site.
